What solutions are developed in SAP Innovation Center?
On March 23rd, together with Paweł Skiba, we visited SAP Innovation Center in Potsdam. The visit took place as part of our victory in the InnovMatch Challenge 2017.
The stay started with an official welcome and a guided tour of the building by Jennifer Friedrichs and Lea Bailer. We managed to visit the two-piece Innovation Center building, where we saw, among other things:
- design thinking rooms – almost the entire center has been designed according to this philosophy,
- offices and individual booths for quick meetings to isolate from external factors,
- common areas for relaxation, including terrace, swings, coffee area, and canteen,
- a testing room with the latest technologies such as IoT devices, and robots, where customers are invited to try them out,
gym.
The newest technologies in SAP
Blockchain and machine learning
We also got acquainted with several Proofs of Concept, using the most innovative technologies. These include a model explaining blockchain in the real estate industry. We were also introduced to the CV evaluation game, which uses machine learning.
Image processing and bots
Image processing and bots are shown in the example of a solution analyzing camera footages. It recognizes the elements of clothing and tells a user what they can buy to match them. The bot connected to the app answers fashion questions. We could ask him about the popular colors in London. In response, we received recommendations generated from Instagram posts.
Mixed reality with Microsoft HoloLens
The mixed reality is represented by Microsoft HoloLens application, which showed us the locations of SAP offices via mixed reality glasses.
What is SAP’s approach to innovation?
The building itself turned out to be very modern and favorable to creative thinking. It is located in a picturesque environment, close to the river. In the center, employees can use a volleyball court, barbecue area, and benches with wireless charging stations, which draw energy from solar batteries.
The next item on the agenda was the meeting “Innovating in Large Corporations – Innovation at SAP”. They were led by the Upen Barve and Natascha Josipovic duo. Thanks to it we got acquainted with SAP’s approach to the latest technologies – which of them they explore and how they evaluate which ones are worth investing.
We also learned about Intrapreneurship program. Within it, SAP periodically collects initiatives inside the company. On their basis, teams are created to develop them and compete for the prize, which is to create a new product and become its Business Owner. The example of the effects of this programme is Ruum, an artificial intelligence project management tool:
For our part, we talked about our initiatives that combine technologies of mixed reality, internet of things, and artificial intelligence to create business applications.
SAP Health – projects developing the potential of modern medicine
The last part of the day was to get to know the SAP Health team. Łukasz Ostrowski told us about the projects implemented as part of this initiative and the products applied by SAP in this area. This was of particular interest to us in the context of VSI, a mixed reality solution for surgeons.
The whole event allowed us to familiarize ourselves even more closely with the SAP plans concerning the latest technological trends. Would you like to know more about this topic? Read our article “4 Leading SAP Trends in 2018”.
