PLANET-ON – Smart & Green Industry Hackathon overview
On December 3-4, PSNC Future Labs – Intelligent Space of the Laboratories of the Future – hosted the PLANET-ON international hackathon, which we were pleased to partner with. The event brings together innovators, designers, developers, R&D professionals and climate fighters addressing pro- environmental challenges related to conservation of natural resources & prevention of resource ever exploitation, sustainable development and the search for renewable energy sources.
Within 24 hours, the interdisciplinary teams developed prototypes of solutions to global problems caused by the imbalance in nature resulting from human activity. At the end, the participants gave eight-minute presentations to discuss their projects and convince the jury members. After heated deliberations, the judges decided to award three teams. Besides financial prizes, the winners may receive an invitation to continue working on prototype solutions in cooperation with volunteers and experts co-creating PLANET-ON.

The green hackathon is organized by PSNC Future Labs – a pre-incubator of services, undertakings and projects, providing access to living labs in the “proof-of-concept” methodology and space for ideas exchange. Marek Bernolak, Internet of Things Specialist at RapidLab and the jury member evaluating the innovative solutions, reports hackathon for us.
I was hoping that the participants would present many exciting answers to this year’s challenges, and I must admit – the results exceeded my wildest expectations. All the teams were very committed to their projects and the challenge issued by Apollogic – Clean Forests (How do we keep our green areas safe from garbage, debris, and toxic waste? Use of technology to prevent illegal dumping sites in our forests) – was enthusiastically received. The most interesting projects were focused on increasing the cleanliness of forests through social apps and local community engagement and improving the cleanliness of green surroundings using IoT and AI.
When evaluating participants’ works, I paid attention to the impact that a given project can have on the environment on a global or local scale, usability (whether the project solves a real issue), the selection of appropriate tools and technological solutions in the context of solving the problem, the form of presentation of the concept, the progress of work during the hackathon and the readiness for launching. The most exciting projects were also the winning ideas, and I believe they have a real chance of being implemented.

We want to thank all participants for their commitment and significant contribution to the project. We believe that the PSNC Future Labs team will coordinate the further development of the presented solutions in cooperation with their authors.
