Business Warehouse on SAP HANA – successful migration!
Recently we have written an article about the transfer of current Business Warehouse (BW) system onto SAP HANA. We are pleased to announce that the project has been a success.
SAP Business Warehouse is a data warehouse platform used by companies which enables storage and consolidation of information important for the company. The information can be obtained from different source systems, such as ERP or CRM SRM, as well as from traditional databases. It turns out to be crucial when efficient access to desired information is a priority.
SAP HANA is a solution based on in-memory technology. Its main assumption is storing data used for further calculations directly in the working memory of the server. This approach significantly reduces the time required for executing queries, therefore reducing the need of loading data from a traditional hard drive which, so far, has been a “bottleneck” of standard approaches. The main advantage of the SAP HANA, from a business point of view, is a significant increase of performance which directly translates into shorter times of waiting for information – usually in the course of analysis or while generating a report.
There are three basic scenarios for migrating SAP BW onto SAP HANA:
- New installation done from scratch
- Classic migration (using the SWPM tool)
- Update and migration in one step (using the DMO tool)
Proof of Con assumed that we already have a running instance of SAP BW. That is why we decided to revise scenarios number two and three. The case which assumes the initial existence of the BW system turns out to be much more interesting. It enables to imitate the situation in which companies usually find themselves. The main challenge is to pay special attention to the aspect of minimizing system downtime, which will not be the case when a new system is implemented.
Migration and related tests associated went very smoothly thanks to a good, well selected team, consisting of Łukasz Konieczny – SAP Basis/Administrator and Simon Lingott and Marcin Świderski – Business Intelligence consultants.
In subsequent articles we will present a comparison of migration methods using SWPM and DMO tools. Then, we will share our experiences of using the new system.
