SAP Connected Health Platform – an integrated platform from SAP!
SAP Connected Health Platform is the latest SAP product, founded on SAP HANA database, meant to integrate, store and analyze patient medical data. Its advantage is the capability to integrate different types of data of varying origin, both structured and easily recyclable, such as database tables, files, Excel, csv or other standard formats used to store patient data, as well as unstructured data such as prescriptions, medical records and physician recommendations.
The demo version tested by Apollogic Business Intelligence team specialists is based on data of patients diagnosed with cancer. A very important component of the Connected Health is, in this case, the possibility to integrate research and patient genetic information and making assessment on the basis of their genetic predispositions including, e.g., the type of mutation responsible for a specific type of cancer and matching personalized treatment.
Connected Health SAP can be used in many ways. The first is to use it as a platform for analysis of various types of data within a single system. It can also be used as a data warehouse to store information about patients – a kind of electronic files, collecting all data on patient treatment. In addition, SAP Connected Health Platform has a number of specialized functions which include:
- Analysing and comparison of genotypes,
- Building patient cohorts based on specific characteristics (e.g., type of tumour and the type of treatment received) for the needs of clinical research or new drug development,
- A reference point for selection of treatment. This includes, for example, rare cases. If the database is large enough and includes data not only from one hospital, they can be referred to a greater number of cases, check what treatment protocols had been chosen, what gene mutations occurred, the level of survival and on, this basis, choose a treatment
- A platform to build other applications.
The main function of SAP Connected Health includes supporting the process of treatment or clinical research. In terms of process management, certain areas can be identified where the platform can support health care units. The application is, for example, through better access to data on the treatment process (if it is extended by an application to contact a patient with a health care unit). It can also serve as an electronic file in which all patient treatment data are collected in one place and presented on the timeline.
SAP also indicates that, in the near future, the environment can serve as a medium of communication between the various institutions, such as hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, laboratories, and even service payers. It can also support the research process thanks to selection of patients on the basis of certain characteristics adequate for further research clinical or new drug research trials.
There already is a variety of applications using this platform. Examples of solutions include: testing and recording glucose levels (Roche), an application used to oversee pregnancy (Heidelberg University Hospital), data warehouse of information on cancer (Cancer Linq) applications facilitating patient contact with health providers and programs to support hospitals, facilitating patient admissions of and treatment processes.
